Tail of the Dragon: Mastering How To Play

Tail of the Dragon is a fast-paced mobile and desktop game that puts your reaction time and quick thinking to the test. Your goal is to navigate a sea of castles, collecting parts to grow your tail and fly as far as you can without losing it. This game is great for casual play on both mobile devices and computers. If you want to learn how to play Tail of the Dragon, you’ve come to the right place! Let’s get into it.

The Basics

Control the dragon by tapping, holding, and dragging it around the screen. At the start of the game, you are a pretty small dragon. The way to grow your dragon is to collect dragon heads. The dragon heads will each have a number that will add to your dragon’s current length. Collecting as many heads as possible will be key in breaking through obstacles.

Every obstacle has a number on it, this number is the minimum length your dragon must be in order to break through. The number of dragon heads needed varies from obstacle to obstacle.

Some might only take 1-2 dragon heads while others may take 40 or more! Breaking down the castles with higher numbers will add more points to your score, so try your best to always have enough dragon heads to get as many points as you can.

Every time you run into the obstacle you will start to lose dragon heads. If you have more dragon heads than the number on the obstacle, you will break through the obstacle. However, if you have fewer parts than the number on the obstacle, you’ll be forced to restart.

Depending on how many points you score each round, you’ll be rewarded gold coins which you can trade in for new dragon skins. There’s also a challenge mode with tons of goals to unlock.

Tips For Keeping it Together

Now that you understand the basics of how to play the game, let's talk about some tips and tricks that can help you as you play.

Avoid When Possible

One thing that will help you a lot when you first start playing, is avoiding obstacles when you can. Look, we all love breaking things, but sometimes it is best to avoid the earlier castles and save up your dragon heads for bigger, unavoidable, obstacles that lie ahead. Try to collect as many dragon heads as you can early on so you have a buffer for those bigger castles.

Make Quick Decisions

In order to go far in Tail of the Dragon, you need to be able to think quickly. If you see an obstacle that doesn’t require a lot of dragon heads to break, try to get over to it and avoid more expensive obstacles. It’s best to look out for the lighter-colored castles. Those are usually ones with numbers less than 10, which lowers your risk of losing all your parts.  This is easier said than done however, you'll find out that the game starts to move pretty fast as you go on.

Find Power-Ups

Sometimes breaking obstacles will give you power-ups that will help you in the game. Try to look out for these power-ups and get them when you can. Magnets, fireballs, and invincibility are what you’re looking out for. They are a great way to get further ahead in the game without putting in much work. They’ll help you in different ways, but they are all worth getting so make them a priority.
