How to Play Snake

Tap or swipe to guide your snake.  Eat as many apples as you can to grow as long as possible. But don't hit the wall, or eat your tail!

Coolmath’s snake game is different from most. When you eat an apple, your tail grows by four blocks instead of the usual one. The snake also moves quicker than the classic game, so you’ll have to think fast! How long can you survive?

Snake Tips & Tricks

Snake can be a tricky game to become proficient in. Not to worry though, we have some beginner tips to help out!

Master the sharp turns

A good trick to have under your belt as you play snake is being able to turn on a dime. Since the snake is so speedy, crashing can happen before you can react. The more you play, try to master those sharp turns to narrowly escape hitting a wall.

Be patient

It can be tempting to grab the apples as fast as you can, but if you narrowly miss an apple, it's better to wait until your snake tail has moved away from it before going in for another pass.

Hug the wall

As you play snake, your tail will keep growing and growing with every apple you eat. An easy trick to avoid crashing into the walls or your tail is to trace the perimeter of the screen. This keeps the rest of the field open and easy to navigate.

Utilize the zig-zag

The snake’s ultimate move! If you find your tail getting a bit too long, quickly shift from side to side to create a zig-zag pattern on the screen. Moving this way will buy you some time as the rest of the tail catches up.

What You Learn from Playing Snake

Playing snake can help improve hand-eye coordination and reaction time, since you'll have to act fast to keep the snake from crashing.

Eat as many apples as you can to grow as long as possible. Use the arrow keys to control your Snake and the spacebar to pause. Be careful not to hit the wall or eat your tail!

Is there an end to Snake?

Snake ends when a player does one of either two things – runs into their tail or into a wall. Once this happens, the game pauses, and players will be given the option to restart.

What is the highest score in Snake?

The scores vary from version to version. Some Snake games have a high score of 99,999 points, others have high scores around 100. Coolmath Games is kind of in the middle, with the highest possible score being 999 points.

Can you go backward in Snake?

Just like sharks, this Snake can only go forwards. To go backward, you’ll have to take a right or left turn twice. This gives the game a fun challenge, players will have to maneuver around the map without being able to move in all directions.

How big is the map in Snake?

In our Coolmath Games version of Snake, the map is 37 squares across, and 27 squares down. This gives the player 999 squares to work with. While that may sound like a lot, the map can feel awfully small, with edges approaching quickly!

How do you win Snake?

Winning Snake is a feat that is extremely rare. To truly win Snake, players must fill up the entire map without hitting their tail. That means that players will have to eat roughly 250 apples without running into themselves or the walls around them. While you’re welcome to try and get a perfect game in Snake, we think that it is much more reasonable to try and get a score of 500 first. This is already an extremely difficult challenge, and players of any level would be excited by a score that high.

What games are like Snake?

Surprisingly, we have quite a few games that have similar gameplay to Snake. A few of the fan favorites are Powerline.io and Impossible Snake 2.

In Powerline.io, players are trying to become as large of a snake as they can. Instead of growing your snake by eating apples though, players are gaining length by destroying other snakes and eating the neon bits that they are made of. If you love the fast-paced gameplay and the reactions that are required of Snake, then you should definitely give Powerline.io a try.

Impossible Snake 2 is kind of like if Snake became a puzzle game. In Impossible Snake 2, players must slither back and forth in an attempt to eat all of the apples on the map and get to the exit. However, it is not as simple as it sounds. You must get pasts objects and ghosts blocking your way, as well as deal with a snake that refuses to slow down.

How old is Snake?

Snake is actually based on a game called Blockade, created by the gaming company Gremlin. They released the game in 1976 and it quickly took off in arcades.
